Week 1-2: Let It Sink In

You're allowed to feel whatever you're feeling. Relief. Grief. Fear. All of these at once. There's no "right" way to feel about a diagnosis.

🧠 Need to talk?

  • Autism Kent: 01227 812220
  • NAS Helpline: 0808 800 4104
  • SENDIASS Kent: 0300 123 6728

What you CAN do now:

  • Get the diagnosis letter — ask for copies for your records
  • Tell your child's school — they should start supporting straight away (even without an EHCP)
  • Register with Kent Local Offerkent.gov.uk
  • Start a folder — keep copies of everything

Month 1: The Basics

1. Apply for DLA (Disability Living Allowance)

This is non-means tested — your income doesn't matter. It can be up to £182/week.

  • Apply online: gov.uk
  • Kent parents tip: Keep a diary for 2 weeks. Write down EVERYTHING extra you do that neurotypical parents don't. This is the key to a successful claim.
  • Time: Usually takes 8-12 weeks

2. Tell Key People

  • School / nursery / childminder
  • Health visitor / school nurse
  • GP
  • Family (if you want)

3. Request a School SEN Support Meeting

Schools must identify and meet SEN under the SEND Code of Practice. They don't need an EHCP to provide support.

Month 2-3: Building Support

1. Consider an EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan)

An EHCP legally forces the local authority to provide the support your child needs. In Kent, you request through:

  • Online: Kent County Council
  • Deadline: They have 6 weeks to decide whether to assess
  • Tip: You don't need a diagnosis to request — but it helps

2. Explore Therapies

Kent NHS Therapy Waiting Times

  • Speech & Language: 18-24 months wait
  • Occupational Therapy: 12-18 months wait
  • Mental Health (CAMHS): 12+ months

Many parents go private. See our therapist directory.

3. Connect with Other Parents

  • Kent PACT — Parents and Carers Together
  • Autism Kent — parent support groups
  • Local Facebook groups — search "Kent autism parents" or "SEND [your town]"

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a diagnosis to get support?

No. Schools must support children with SEN regardless of diagnosis. You can request an EHCP assessment without a diagnosis. However, a diagnosis helps, especially for secondary school transition and post-16 support.

How much is DLA for an autistic child?

It varies. The care component ranges from £28.70/week (Lower) to £107.57/week (Higher). The mobility component can add another £28.70-75.35/week. Many autistic children get Middle Care + High Mobility.

Can I work if my child has autism?

Yes. But you may qualify for Carer's Allowance if you care for 35+ hours/week and earn under £151/week. You might also qualify for Universal Credit childcare costs help.

What if my child's school isn't helping?

First, request a meeting with the SENCO. Put concerns in writing. If no progress, ask for a formal SEN support plan. Finally, you can request an EHCP — 98% of parents win at tribunal.
